How Much Does a Proposal Cost on the Sunshine Coast?

A proposal on the Sunshine Coast typically costs between $850 and $1,500 for a professionally styled setup, including florals, champagne, grazing, styling and pack down. A do it yourself version runs roughly $150 to $500. Photography adds $650 to $2,500. Luxury multi-vendor proposals start around $2,500 and go up from there. None of these figures include the ring.
That is the answer. The rest of this page is where the money actually goes, three worked budgets with real totals, and the fees that tend to appear after you have already said yes to a quote.
We style proposals across the Sunshine Coast most weeks of the year, so these are working numbers rather than estimates. Where we quote our own prices, we have said so.
Why this is so hard to find out
Most proposal companies will not publish a price. You fill in a form, you wait, and a number arrives by email once someone has worked out how much you seem willing to spend.
It is an understandable business decision and a frustrating one if you are simply trying to work out whether this costs $500 or $5,000 before you start planning. So here is the whole picture.
The four things you are paying for
Almost every proposal budget breaks into the same four parts. Understanding them makes any quote easy to read.
● The setting. Furniture, canopy or teepee, rugs, cushions, lighting, table styling. This is the bulk of a styled package and the part you cannot replicate with a picnic rug from home.
● The consumables. Florals, champagne, grazing, petals. These are used once.
● The labour. Location scouting, planning, delivery, setup, being on site, and pack down afterwards. Invisible in photos, and the single biggest difference between a good experience and a stressful one.
● The record. Photography or video. Optional, and the thing people most often regret skipping.

For reference, our Premium Proposal package is $850 and our Luxe Proposal package is $1,300 for two hours. Other Sunshine Coast proposal companies publish tiers running from around $950 for a simple setup up to $4,900 at the top end. The headline number tells you very little on its own, which is why the comparison checklist further down matters more than the price.

Photography
Sunshine Coast photographers generally charge from about $350 for a short session up to around $600 per hour for wedding rate coverage. For a proposal, 45 minutes to an hour is the sweet spot. The proposal itself takes about 90 seconds. The rest of the time is portraits afterwards, which is what most couples end up printing.
Champagne and grazing
Included in most styled packages. Both of ours include a bottle of Moet and a premium cheese hamper for two. Buying the equivalent yourself runs roughly $85 for the Moet and $60 to $100 for a decent grazing box.
The ring
Not part of a proposal package, but it is the number people are really weighing everything else against. Australian jewellers report that most buyers spend between $3,000 and $8,000 on a complete ring with a lab-grown centre stone, with plenty of good rings well below that. Set the ring budget first, then the proposal budget, not the other way around as the ring is what she has forever.
Three real budgets
Numbers in isolation are hard to picture, so here are three proposals of the kind we actually do, costed out.
1. The sunrise, done yourself: around $500
Empty beach at 6am, a rug, flowers and a photographer hidden in the dunes. Simple and completely lovely.

The catch is that you are carrying, setting up and packing down yourself, on the morning you propose, before coffee.
2. The one most people book: around $1,300

This is the most common shape of booking on the Coast, and the one we would point most people toward.
3. The full production: around $3,300
Canopy setting, live music, video, the works. Usually booked when there is a surprise gathering afterwards.

Worth saying plainly: nothing in this budget makes the answer more likely to be yes. It buys a bigger production, not a better moment.
The costs that appear later
These are the ones that catch people out, and the reason two quotes that look similar can end up hundreds of dollars apart.
● Location access fees. Some spots cost more to set up because they need extra staff to carry everything in. On our side that applies to places like Little Cove, First Bay at Coolum and Alexandra Headland. Beautiful locations, harder logistics.
● Travel or venue fees. Anything a long way from a supplier base usually attracts a travel charge. Ask where they are based before you fall in love with a location an hour away from them.
● Pack down. Check it is included. Otherwise you are moving furniture off a beach in the dark, half an hour after the most emotional moment of your life.
● Public holiday and peak date loading. Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day are the three busiest proposal dates in Australia. Some suppliers charge more, most book out, and almost all need more notice.
● Catering that is non-refundable. Most wet weather policies refund the setup but not food already bought. Ours works that way, and so do most.
● Time overruns. Packages are usually timed. Ours are two hours with extra time available. If you are planning dinner on site, check what you have actually booked.
How to compare two quotes properly
Ask every supplier these seven questions. The answers tell you far more than the price does.
● Is pack down included in that number?
● What is your wet weather policy, in writing, and does moving cost extra?
● Are there access or travel fees for my location?
● How long is the setup booked for, and what happens if we run over?
● Are florals fresh, dried or artificial? There is a real price and quality gap.
● Is photography included, recommended or entirely my problem?
● What is the deposit, and what are the cancellation terms?
On that last one, ours is a $100 deposit with free cancellation up to 72 hours before, and full payment three days out. Some companies take $250 upfront. Both are reasonable, you just want to know before you commit.
Where to spend and where to save
Worth the money
● A proposal planner to liaise and deliver the below.
● Photography. It is the only part of the day that still exists next week.
● Fresh florals. The single biggest visual return per dollar.
● Pack down. You will be in no state to fold furniture.
● Location scouting. Knowing the tide, the wind and where the crowd will be is worth more than any decoration.
Save your money
● Oversized installations. Balloon arches and giant letters date fast and dominate photos.
● Extra hours. Most couples want to leave and call their families within 40 minutes.
● Anything your partner would find embarrassing. Public spectacle is the most expensive way to make someone uncomfortable.
● Peak dates, if you are flexible. A Tuesday in May costs the same and is far easier to book well.

What happens to my money if it rains?
Policies vary, so get it in writing. Ours is that if we cannot safely set up, you are refunded excluding catering already purchased. Once the setup is complete and weather interrupts afterwards, the booking is not refundable. Most suppliers on the Coast work the same way.
How far in advance should I book?
Two to four weeks is usually enough outside peak season. For December, January and Valentine's Day, book six to eight weeks ahead, because that is when both stylists and photographers fill up.
